Spencer Dinwiddie tests positive for coronavirus

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, and has been experiencing symptoms.

With the NBA season set to resume next month at Walt Disney World in Florida, Dinwiddie’s plans for the restart are now up in the air.

“Over the past few months, I have been diligent about protecting myself and others from COVID-19 by following all designated protocol and quarantining,” Dinwiddie said, via The Athletic. “I was ready and prepared to rejoin my teammates as we were to be an early entry team in the resumed season. I flew private to return to New York, passed multiple COVID-19 tests over my first several days in New York and was able to participate in a couple practices within the first week.

“Originally, we were supposed to be one of the teams to enter into the Orlando bubble early, but training camp got switched back to New York and unfortunately I am now positive. Given that I have experienced symptoms, including fever and chest tightness, it is unclear on whether or not I’ll be able to participate in Orlando.

“Hindsight is 20/20.”

Dinwiddie is now in self-isolation, and will re-evaluate his status in two weeks, per the report.

The 27-year-old was averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game with the Nets this season, his sixth in the league, when play was suspended in March. Brooklyn will enter Orlando — where the NBA will resume its season starting on July 30 — with a 30-34 record, the seventh-best in the Eastern Conference.

It’s unclear now if Dinwiddie will participate. Nets forward Wilson Chandler announced on Sunday that he will opt-out of the restart, something players can do without penalty.

Dinwiddie is one of several Nets players to have contracted the virus since the pandemic reached the United States. Teammate Kevin Durant was one of four players on the team to have tested positive earlier this year, too.

There were more than 2.5 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of Monday afternoon, according to The New York Times, and nearly 126,000 deaths attributed to it. Cases have been spiking in recent days, both across the country as a whole and in several states.

Florida had more than 146,000 cases alone, and set a new daily case record on Saturday with more than 9,500 new cases. Orange County, where Disney World is, has more than 10,000 confirmed cases.
